It may seem complicated, but the concept of an Automated Identification Data Collection (AIDC) system is actually quite simple.

  1. Encode: the data (usually alphanumeric characters) is translated into a machine readable code (e.g. barcodes and fingerprints).
  2. Scan: the encoded data is read by a device (e.g. scanner) and converted into an alternative form, usually an electric signal.
  3. Decode: the electric signal is transformed into digital data and finally back into the original alphanumeric characters.
